A neighborhood experiment

The future is a group project.

The best way to get ready for whatever comes next is to know the people next door.

Nobody knows exactly what the next few years will bring. Storms and blackouts, weird prices, strange news, all of it moving fast. No one of us can control that. But there is one thing every one of us can do that makes every possible future easier: know our neighbors. Not wave at them. Know them.

Future Proof NYC is a small experiment in doing exactly that. We are neighbors trying to make our blocks more resilient, more regenerative, and more coherent. Big words, simple meanings:

Resilient

When something hard happens, we bend instead of break, because nobody is facing it alone.

Regenerative

We leave the block a little better than we found it. Greener, kinder, more alive.

Coherent

We actually know each other, so when it counts, we can act together fast.

The Island Idea

Ecologists have a trick for healing damaged land. They do not try to fix the whole field at once. They repair one small patch, and life spreads outward from it on its own, because life wants to live. They call those patches islands.

We think neighborhoods work the same way. One building where people know each other's names. One block that shares tools and dinners and phone numbers. One group chat that answers when somebody asks for help. Start one small island, take good care of it, and watch it reach the next block over.

So that is the plan. Not a movement, not an app. One neighborhood at a time.

What We Actually Do

Learn each other's names. Map what we are each good at: who is a nurse, who fixes bikes, who speaks Spanish, who can cook for forty. Share the things that are silly to own alone, like ladders and drills and folding tables. Throw a party now and then, because neighborhoods are held together by good times long before hard times.

That is it. That is the whole plan. It works better than it sounds.

Where We Come From

Future Proof NYC grew out of Dear Crisis, a New York community turning crisis into connection and connection into action. Dear Crisis asks the big questions about the future. Future Proof is where we practice answers at the scale of a block.

It is tended by Benjamin Von Wong, an artist who believes that in strange times, the most useful thing you can do is get to know the people around you.
